Dog Jump Fail

When I was in third grade, I was hanging out after school with a group of friends at one of their houses. Everyone was having fun taking turns jumping off the roof of the garage into the yard. Except me. I didn't want to do it. I knew I was too clumsy to handle it. But I didn't like being called a chicken either, so I jumped, took a bad tumble and sprained my thumb.
I think a lot of us had a friend or friends growing up that we couldn't keep up with in certain ways, either physically, mentally, socially or whatever. Many people feel like the sidekick in a friendship at one point in their life. For some of you, that's not the case. Which is fine. Good for you. You're winners. But this one goes out to the losers.

I guess there's no need to ask why they named it that.

Duck Plucks Ukulele

Koloa Maoli took up the ukulele because it's the most democratic of stringed instruments. Anyone can pick up a uke and start strumming. With only four strings and some fairly simple chord shapes, you could be making music in minutes. Even the simplest of ditties sound lovely on a uke. George Harrison knew it. He wrote "Here Comes the Sun" on a ukulele while walking around his garden.
What's Koloa Maoli trying to pluck out in his garden? Maybe he has some beautiful Bruddah Iz tune rattling around in his ducky head. He's got a ways to go, but we like the cut of his jib. Catch you at the luau, Koloa.

Monday Squee – Swimming Tiger

I always thought it was a commonly accepted law of nature that cats hate water. Certainly every cat we had when I was growing up hated it. Get even a drop of the stuff on their fur and they'd freak out. And I guess I always assumed that the fear/hatred of H2O applied to all cats, even big cats. So this image confounds me. Do tigers love to swim? Or is this particular tiger one in a million? A tiger who goes against the grain, and does what he likes, and eff the haters? Maybe he just sticks to the shallow end.

Dancing Dog Will Terrify You, Haunt Your Dreams

Is anyone else sick of CGI? It's so cold and alienating. I miss the old days of handmade special effects. Sure they were cheesy and looked like crap most of the time, but you appreciated the effort that true artisans put into creating movie magic.
Take this video, for example. Yeah, I see the guy's head too. But I can turn a blind eye and convince myself that I'm looking at a dancing dog-man. It's called suspension of disbelief, people! And I'd rather watch this on a loop for 90 minutes than sit through "Green Lantern" again.

Moving ain't easy; I know that. It's hard on kids. Your dad got a new job, but it's in Pennsylvania. I hope you said goodbye to all your chums back in Scarsdale, chochaho. It's 120 miles from there to here. That's a long way by bike. You probably won't see any over your friends ever again. Don't worry; you'll make new friends here in Allentown.
Moving's hard on adults. It's expensive, for one thing. There's a lot of organization involved. You had to box up your entire life. At least it was a good chance the purge some clutter. But you're sentimental. Did you make the right decisions about what to keep and what to chuck? Everything was so full of memories. The photos, the tchotchkes, the old house. You grew up in Scarsdale.
Moving is hard on bearded dragons. Sure, I get to stay in the same tank that I've always known, so that gives me a level of comfort. But the scenery's all changed. I don't recognize anything when I look out these windows. I like routine. The move has upset my routine. I've lost a ton of weight from all the stress. Thank goodness for my furry friend. These snuggles really keep my chin up.
