A lot of people get upset by nature videos that depict scenes of animals hunting other animals. These people don't like to see images of a predator taking down its prey in the wild. But look, folks, this is the way the world is. You can hide from it if you want to, but that doesn't change the violent, visceral reality of nature. You can't tell a wild animal to go vegan. Animals kill each other and they eat each other. If we want to learn about the world around us, we need to accept that and even study it. That's why these videos exist. If it's too gruesome, just look away. Look away.

Bear Enjoys a Relaxing Soak in the Jacuzzi

Don't you hate it when you have that one neighbor who lives by a what's-mine-is-yours policy that you never agreed to? It starts innocently enough. He comes by to borrow your shovel because he just had his claws trimmed and can't dig right, so of course you say yes, because you want to be a good neighbor and help out. Then a few weekends later he goes into your shed and borrows your lawn mower without asking, and doesn't even give it back until you go to his place to get it. It's like, hey man, it's not my fault you've been hibernating all winter and let the grass in front of your cave get out of hand, and your manual push-mower won't do the trick. Next thing you know, you look out your back door and he's soaking in your jacuzzi uninvited! And it's so nasty because you just know the drains are gonna get all clogged up with fur, and it's not like he'll offer to clean them out...

Dog Takes Cat for a Scooter Ride

Aw, he thought he was helping! And for a few moments, he was right. It's not pushing the scooter that's impressive. It seems like a fairly simple trick to be honest, albeit one that delivers a lot of entertainment for probably a minimum of training and effort. It's the added charm of the feline passenger that makes this clip such a delight. It sort of doesn't even dawn on you until the twist ending that the dog probably never knew the cat was there to begin with; he was just doing his famous scooter-pushing trick, but this time with a stowaway. Really it's our never-ending need to anthropomorphize our pets all the time that leads us to create the narrative of a helpful dog giving a cat a helpful ride, which is a little bit insane when you think about it for a second. Still, never has a canine gained so much of our respect and admiration only to lose it immediately.

Puppy’s First Year – Time-Lapse Video

We were just thinking recently that we were pretty sick of the whole time-lapse-aging-video meme. A bunch of self-involved people vain enough to take their own portrait every day for five years, seven years, 10 years--then showing all the photos in rapid succession on a YouTube video with some faux-dramatic musical bed. It was clever and even fascinating the first time, but that was several years ago at this point. Enough is enough!
Of course, as soon as we saw this video of a puppy age over the course of his first year of life, we backpedaled fast enough to reverse time. We literally traveled back in time to when we said "enough is enough," and then we didn't say it. Because we haven't had enough of this. Everyone needs to do this. We want this kind of document for every breed of puppy and every color of kitten. Don't let us down, Paw Nation readers. Start snappin'!

Border Collie Sticks Her Tongue Out on Command

Sometimes when my cat is giving herself a bath, and I call her name to get her attention at the right moment, she'll look at me mid-lick and forget to put her tongue back in her mouth. I find this hilarious every time. And though she often leaves her tongue hanging out for several long seconds, all my attempts to photograph it or call it to anyone else's attention have failed; she always manages to retract the tongue at the last second.
This video makes me wish cats were as trainable as dogs, and that I had the apparent patience of this border collie's owner. I wouldn't have to wait for the right tongue-wagging moment to try to snap a picture, only to fail once again. I could get my cat to do it on command. I could show it to all my friends. I could show my folks when we Skype on Sundays. And, as evidenced by this clip, I could upload an awesome video to YouTube and show everyone else in the world too.

Pugs in a Conga Line. ‘Nuff Said.

We've noticed a trend. Lately is seems like an increasing number of the more astonishing pet tricks we've been seeing on the Internet aren't home-grown. No, to a large degree, many of these impressive animal videos are Asian in origin. Now, don't get us wrong; we love the Asian countries and their rich cultures. We're not complaining about their efforts. But you guys, they're kind of making us Westerners look like chumps. Only just recently we've seen a Japanese dog who can catch with his paws, a Chinese cat who instructs a human how to open a container, and now an adorable Japanese pug conga line? We should have thought of that! That should have been ours! But no, our best answer Stateside is a cat who can't jump onto a low ledge, and a dog who tries to play fetch with a statue. Maybe we should be less concerned with laughing at our pets' failures and start training them to be viral-video champions. Step yo' game up, America! Because when we watch this excellent video, we don't see just two precious pugs dancing in a conga line; we see a missed opportunity.

Monday Squee – An Adorable Embrace

Never, never attempt to snuggle, cuddle, nuzzle, wuzzle, or otherwise hug or be hugged by any Panthera tigris--also known as tigers--including Bengal, Indochinese, Malayan, Siberian, South China, or Sumatran subspecies, or any varieties as yet undiscovered by humans.
Not that I have to repeat that for you; we all memorized it as schoolchildren.
And yet the desire to cuddle the uncuddleable, to be wuzzled by the unwuzzleable--well, there wouldn't be an official rule against it if it wasn't so powerful. But we can live vicariously through photos like these, through men like the one pictured here, whom we assume is a highly-trained professional, or perhaps a crazy idiot with a death wish.

Second-Story Cats – Tips for Countertop Cruising Cats

The urge to be the top cat seems a universal cat vice. By understanding why cats scale the heights, cat owners can provide legal outlets that keep both their cats happy and out of the butter dish.
Why Cats Love Heights
Cats come pre-programmed to seek elevated lounging spots. Think about it: cats in the wild want to see enemies (and potentially munchable critters) while remaining invisible. A cat quite literally believes it "owns" the space it can see.
Cats also control each other's interactions--or even the dog's movements--with pointed stares. This packs even more punch from an elevated perch, giving the cat ownership and control over even more territory. The cat that commands the highest perch is the high-cat-on-the-totem-pole in that particular room.
