Shanghai Enacts Controversial One-Dog Policy

As municipalities in the United States explore new ways to keep their ballooning pet populations in check, leaders in Shanghai, China's largest metropolis, have chosen to simply ban its 23 million citizens from owning more than one dog per household, reports Bloomberg. And, of course, the one-dog policy is drawing comparisons to China's infamous one-child policy, enacted in 1979.

The number of Chinese citizens enjoying the benefits of dog ownership has reportedly skyrocketed. Unfortunately, many of the problems associated with dog ownership have also risen.

The Daily Shanghai estimates that there are 600,000 unlicensed dogs walking the sidewalks of Shanghai, while the number of dog bites reported by city police has increased 40 percent since 2006. In addition to all that, many complain that housing millions of dogs in an urban area can get a little messy.

Zootoo Review – 5 Tasty Cat Treats

This article is from Paw Nation

Though cats might be (ahem) more difficult to train than dogs, they still deserve tasty, top-quality treats. Whether you want to tell your feline friend "you were very brave at the vet today" or "thanks for using your scratching post instead of my sofa," a delicious snack can be the ideal reward.

But with the range of cat nibbles on the market, selecting the right treat can be a challenge. Our friends at Zootoo rounded up some of their favorite feline treats to give your cat something special to munch on.

cat treatsPet Greens

Available in Deep Sea Tuna and Roasted Chicken flavors, Semi-Moist Cat Treats from Pet Greens feature wheatgrass, making them healthy alternatives to potentially dangerous indoor plants. Loaded with antioxidants and vitamins, these appealing treats won over our tester cats with the smell and taste of real fish and meat. Also, with a semi-moist texture, these snacks are easier for felines to chew than crunchy treats -- a plus for kittens or senior cats.

cat treatsHalo

For pet owners who are tired of deciphering ingredients lists, the Liv-a-Littles Protein Treats from Halo feature only one ingredient per flavor: "freeze-dried beef" or "freeze-dried white meat chicken." The real meaty taste of these treats appeals to cats -- and the high protein content and lack of additives appeal to their owners. As a bonus, these treats are also suitable for dogs, making them ideal for multipet households.

Cute Pet of the Day – February 24, 2011

This article is from Paw Nation

Name: Genevieve

Location: Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

Age: 2 years

Cat Breed: British shorthair (blue)

Favorite Toy: Her mouse -- a realistic-looking furry toy mouse, now minus a tail!

Favorite Treats: Chunks of fresh chicken, occasionally a bit of cheese.

Likes: Cuddles and lots of attention! Being carried about like a baby.

Dislikes: Being left alone during the day and when all the lights go out at night. "We suspect she's afraid of the dark," her owners say.

Weird Quirks: "Climbs on our bed and meows very loudly at 3 a.m. for us to come play and can't understand why we don't."

Fun Fact: Genevieve was the only kitten in her litter; there were no others at all! Her mother, Mystery, is our other cat. They are great company for one another but occasionally have a bit of a scuffle and her fur flies.

Congratulations to our submitter, nancello photos. If you'd like to submit your pet, upload your favorite pet photos to our Flickr pool.

Contortionist Kitty Loves Tiny Glass Jars

This article is from Paw Nation

Ksyusha the Himalayan may look like a perfectly ordinary, everyday house cat -- until you find her happily curled up inside a pickle jar on your kitchen counter. After a cute/weird photo featuring the kitty chilling out in a large jelly jar emerged online, Ksyusha, the so-called "contortionist cat," is getting worldwide attention.

According to Ksyusha's owner, Yuriy Korotun, this very special kitty can often be found fitting her feline frame inside cylindrical objects, including washing machines and jars. And you thought your cat had some strange habits!

"She was a special kitten from the beginning -- always very playful," Korotun tells the Daily Mirror. "I came into the kitchen one day to find her in the jar. I couldn't believe my eyes."

We can barely believe it either. Even though the video commentator says that the cat always makes her way out of the tight spaces she gets herself into, we are very nervous for Ksyusha!

Does your cat have any bizarre predilections or hidden talents? Maybe he or she could be the next online feline sensation.
