Chinese leaders have told their diplomats to seek greater political and economic influence, changing tack from the low profile they relied on for decades to allay foreign concerns about the country’s growing might.
China’s new status found voice in last year’s Beijing Olympics was bolstered by its role in fighting the global financial crisis and will be cemented on Thursday with the 60th birthday of the People’s Republic.
President Hu Jintao earlier this year publicly urged ambassadors to give China a more powerful international presence.

BALLINA left Monivea on Sunday evening knowing that they had been highly competitive against the tournament favourites, but also well aware that the team who takes their opportunities wins the spoils.

David Newman and Andy Moynihan at out-half and full-back respectively, kicked the ball well out of hand earning good territory and in the pack, wing-forwards Paul Neary and Shane Loftus led the way, driving forward when in possession and doggedly tackling and fighting for the ball in defence.

The Mayo fighter was sharper, faster and stronger than his opponent and although many experts had installed Sweeney as the under-dog, he showed everyone the error of those predictions with an excellent display.

Aware that his legacy was in tatters and lay in ruins, Oliphant finally grew a backbone in what was his last day as boss during the drama-riddled Safa presidential elections at OR Tambo Airport.

A plan to put in a fast-food restaurant right next door, however, has people crying foul.
It would bring the noise and traffic too close, they say, as well as bring commercial development into an area zoned for residences.
“During a service, having a moment of silence, nobody wants to hear, ‘Do you want a combo meal? Do you want a large drink?’ ” said Curt Weiman, who manages the cemetery.
