In front of 100,000 supporters at his acceptance speech, Barack Obama repledged his promise to buy daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, a puppy for the White House, and already the predictions are rolling in.

Hundreds of readers posted naming suggestions on The Guardian’s website and Reddit.com yesterday. Some conjured history - Abrahound Lincoln and Dwight D. Eisenbow-wower - while others offered pop-cultural nods: Fistbump, Oprah and Tina.

There were the predictable Republican disses - Dubya, or Rumsfeld if it’s a Rottweiler - but most were aimed at Sarah Palin: Bristol, Maverick and Lipstick, if the family opts for a pit bull. Others, like Bark Obama, had less bite.

The pup will join a long line of first dogs in the White House: George W. Bush has a Scottish terrier, Barney, while Bill Clinton had a chocolate Lab named Buddy. Lyndon Johnson liked to swing his beagle around by the ears - it was simply named Him.

According to Chicagobreakingnews.com, Malia has expressed her desire for a “goldendoodle,” a hybrid of golden retriever and standard poodle. Michelle Obama indicated in an interview last month that the family would like to adopt a rescue dog. Meanwhile, a summertime poll from the American Kennel Club surveyed 42,000 voters. The people spoke, and they want a purebred poodle.
